According to multiple media reports, the two Shafia men being accused of murder in the Kingston Rideau Canal deaths were held in the same cell at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee, Ont., on Tuesday.

A court order stipulates that Mohammad Shafia, 56, and his son Hamed Shafia, 18, are not to have any contact with each other.

LCN reported that prison authorities placed the two in the isolation unit together to protect them from other prisoners, after Hamed was allegedly attacked by an inmate on Saturday.

The lawyer representing the Shafias, Jean Claude Dubé, could not be reached for comment, but told the Kingston Whig-Standard yesterday that the responsibility falls on the detention centre to uphold the court order and keep the accused separate.

The newspaper also reported yesterday that Mohammad Shafia has since been moved to the Carleton Detention Centre in Ottawa.

St. Leonard residents Mohammad Shafia, Hamed and his mother, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, have all been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of conspiracy to commit murder in the deaths of four family members.

A submerged black Nissan containing the bodies of the couple’s three daughters, Zainab, 19, Sahari, 17, and Geeti, 13, and Mohammad’s first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad, was discovered in the Rideau Canal on June 30. The family was apparently returning to Montreal from a vacation in Niagara Falls. Various media reports are now suggesting that the murder plot may have dated back to May.
