Authorities say a man about to be extradited from Canada to face charges in a 1984 slaying in Huntington Beach, Calif., apparently committed suicide after learning his appeal to avoid extradition had been denied.

Orange County prosecutors and Huntington Beach police say Gerald Su Go was taken to a hospital Thursday night in Toronto, where he was declared dead.

Go, a Canadian citizen, was charged with murder in the November 1984 killing and attempted rape of Elizabeth Hoffschneider.

Her body was found the next day, but the case remained unsolved for 23 years.

A DNA match in 2005 linked Go to Hoffschneider’s killing. He was deported to Canada after finishing a sentence in an unrelated sexual assault case.

Huntington Beach police moved to extradite Go. He appealed and his appeal was denied Thursday.
