An Ontario court is hearing that the bodies of three teenaged sisters and their father’s first wife were found suspended inside a submerged car at the bottom of a canal.
Sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and 13-year-old Geeti Shafia, were discovered with Shafia’s first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad, 50, in a car discovered June 30, 2009 in the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ont.
The girls’ mother, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 41, their father, Mohammad Shafia, 58, and their older brother, Hamed Mohammad Shafia, 20, are each charged with four counts of first-degree murder. The Crown alleges the Montreal family couldn’t bear the “treachery” of their daughters having boyfriends, so the family members killed them and staged the scene to look like an accident.
Kingston police Const. Julia Moore is testifying Friday that the bodies of Sahar and Rona Amir Mohammad were in sitting positions in the back of the car.
She says the bodies of Geeti and Zainab were described by a police diver as floating above their seats in the front of the vehicle.
