CALGARY – Three of four alleged gang members accused of being involved in a bloody 2008 shootout in Calgary’s downtown Chinatown district have opted not to go to trial.

Chantha Kim, 32, Shaun Paul Roberts, 26, and Daniel Andre Landry, 24, who each face four counts of attempted murder and several weapons offences, are expected to plead guilty to lesser charges next month.

A date was set by Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Earl Wilson on Friday for April 9 after lawyer John James advised him of plans for “a final conclusion” to the three men’s cases.

James represents Roberts and was appearing on behalf of Steve Virk, for Kim, and David Chow, for Landry. It is expected the three accused and Crown prosecutor Shane Parker will have an agreement on the facts and sentencing at the upcoming hearing.

Also Friday, lawyer Dean Zuk pleaded not guilty on behalf of Marcel Derilas Landry, 27, Daniel’s older brother, and set a two-week Queen’s Bench trial to begin June 14.

He faces the same charges as the other three accused men.

Police have said the shooting on Nov. 16, 2008, began when the occupants of an SUV pulled up alongside a car in the 200 block of Centre Street S. and opened fire.

The targets were members of a rival gang.

The men are allegedly members of the FK gang, which has been in a deadly battle with the rival FOB gang for several

All four men were ordered to stand trial last year, in the first case to be heard in the new high-security courtroom on the 17th floor of the Calgary Courts Centre. The room features thick Plexiglas to the ceiling, separating the body of the court from the public gallery.

All four accused in this case were denied bail and have been in custody since January.
